Wake Up with YNPN Cleveland - The Divide in Diversity

Wake_Up_-_August_2017.jpg

In August, we welcome back our popular Wake Up with YNPN Cleveland! series with a necessary discussion about diversity. Our speakers include Dan Cohn, Program Officer with Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation, and Khalilah Worley, Director of Collective Leadership with Teach For America. Grab a cup of coffee and engage in the discussion as they unpack the true definition of diversity, inclusion and equity. They will discuss why it is important not only to create opportunities for all people, but also tackle the issues that surface when there is a lack of diversity in nonprofit organizations. Attendees are encouraged to pose questions and participate in the discussion.

We hope this conversation will help YNPN Cleveland's members and friends approach the topic in a real way and to spark thoughts and conversations that can continue in the future.

To help us guide this conversation, please fill out this survey when you register: https://goo.gl/forms/tS34YtMkchndl2cw2  Your responses will help Simone, our Professional Development Chair and the event organizer, facilitate a productive discussion with the speakers.

Please note our new location - Lucky's Cafe in Tremont! We'll provide the coffee, but if you want to grab some breakfast too, we suggest arriving a little early.

Dan Cohn

Dan boomeranged to Cleveland two years ago after nearly ten years of city-hopping along the east coast. He currently serves as Program Officer with the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation, where we develops and executes grantmaking strategies in community health and health policy. Before his return, Dan was Assistant Director of Cornell University's Center for Engaged Learning + Research, where he helped faculty and students channel their academic interests toward meeting community needs. In 2012, he served as an Emerson National Hunger Fellow with the Congressional Hunger Center during which time he supported a nonprofit in Boston in building organizational capacity for state-level advocacy and helped launch a now national Food As Medicine advocacy initiative. He then spent time at the USDA Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships working on the First Lady's Let's Move campaign and on economic development outreach in the rural South. His academic background is in public health, and since 2013, he has facilitated numerous workshops on racial identity development, racial micro-aggressions, and anti-racist practice. In his spare time, he enjoys teaching yoga, sipping lattes, and holding friends’ hands while they get tattoos.

Khalilah Worley is a native Clevelander and Director of Collective Leadership with Teach For America in the Northeast Ohio region. Khalilah recently transitioned from her role as an organizer with Greater Cleveland Congregations, a non-partisan coalition of faith communities in Cuyahoga County working together to build power for social justice. GCC unites people across lines of race, class, religion, and geography to promote public, private and civic sector actions to strengthen and improve the quality of life in Cuyahoga County. GCC challenged residents to imagine the change they can accomplish, connect individuals and organizations to build power, and mobilize members by the thousands to make their voices heard.

In the past, she served as director for Holy Family School administering internal and external programs for students and residents in the North Lawndale community of Chicago. She is also the former creator and director of Young Empowered Sisters program for at-risk teens and former co-director of Sisters for Higher Education a program for first-generation college students. While living in Chicago she was also a volunteer leader with Public Action for Change Today (PACT). Khalilah helped lead campaigns to register more than 13,000 young adult voters and increase diversity to Illinois State Board and Commission seats.

Ms. Worley received several awards for leadership and service from the Illinois Humane Society, Ceasefire Violence Prevention Program, West Side Ministers Coalition, Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy, and Al Raby High School (Chicago, IL). She graduated from Fisk University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science/Public Administration and received her Masters of Science in Public Service and Non-Profit Management from DePaul University.
