It’s a good thing that Kara Whaley says that her superpower is spreadsheets because she’s joined YNPN Cleveland’s Board of Directors to provide Budget and Evaluation Support. She currently works in web design and administration at Annevar Media, LLC, a job that started out part-time as she tried to figure out what she really wanted to do. She now enjoys this work very much. It involves connecting with clients, managing data, and learning new things—all skills that make her perfect to serve on our organization’s Board.
Kara came to Ohio in 2010 from Carlsbad, New Mexico, to attend school at Kent State University. After completing a B.A. in Sociology, with a minor in Women’s Studies, Kara pursued further coursework in nonprofit management, public administration, and sociology. This wide array of academic expertise helps her manage the variety of tasks involved in her current position. She now lives in Akron, but loves to come to Cleveland. When asked what her favorite thing about our city is, she said: “Melt. Concerts. The lake. Do I have to choose?”
Besides getting to know Northeast Ohio, Kara lists photography and reading among her hobbies, and learning new things is a priority for her spare time. She likes to hang out at board game cafes and do bar trivia, but also enjoys Harry Potter trivia and Dungeons and Dragons. Kara is a published Huffington Post blogger who enjoys combining her work expertise with her Harry Potter expertise. If she could travel anywhere right now, she’d head to Finland because she loves the language and would love to see the Northern Lights.
Ultimately, Kara got involved with YNPN Cleveland because she says that she believes our organization lives and breathes its mission. She continued, “how YNPN operates, it renews my faith in how nonprofits can operate – openly, honestly, and with an eye towards making things better and providing value for its members.” We’re so happy to have her on board to help us evaluate our programs and to help us continue providing value to our members in the future.
